We were very lucky last week to have a visit from Andy Salmon (also known as Sir Linkalot), who taught us some super tricks on using links to spell difficult words. The children had such a great time and impressed us all with what they could remember!

We've been learning in Year 2 about the importance of eating a balanced diet. We smelled and tasted some fruits - a few of which we'd tried before, and some which were completely new to us! We used the results of our taste test to make a tally chart and graph showing our favourite fruits. Pomegranates and blackberries were a hit, but some of us still aren't convinced by the mango!
One of the trickiest things we learn in Maths is to tell the time to the nearest five minutes! We've all been practising this using mini clocks - please carry on practising at home! Recently, the children have been working hard making the fairytale puppets they designed. With adult help, they've been sewing and using glue guns to construct the puppets, and have added some lovely, imaginative decoration. Many thanks to all the parent helpers who have given up their time to support the children in this - we're incredibly grateful! We'll add some more puppet photos when they're all finished. If you'd like to see what we've done so far, a selection of the puppets are on display in the KS1 corridor. We're sure you'll agree - they're incredible! A massive well done to our Year 2 choir, who represented us so beautifully at the Infant Music Festival! Despite some illnesses and some technical problems, the children were amazing and we're so proud of them!
What a fantastic day we had at Colchester Zoo! We were very lucky with the weather and lots of animals, including the impressive tigers, were easily visible. Although we didn't stop to make many notes, the children have remembered lots of facts about animals they saw or read about at the zoo, and this has come across in their writing and their work on habitats. The children represented Edward Francis beautifully and we were very proud of their manners and behaviour. Thanks to all the parents who helped out! What a lovely time we had on World Book Day. Our costumes looked fantastic when we showed them off in the Key Stage One parade. Then we played a quiz in teams, answering mixed questions about books, nursery rhymes, authors and fairytales. This week we've been learning to read scales to measure capacity. We've been solving lots of capacity problems and have had lots of fun measuring wet ingredients for our fairytale potions. We've learned that sometimes scales don't show the number we need, so we have to use extra lines as a guide and sometimes even estimate points between the numbers. For example, if a scale is jumping up in steps of 100, we've learned that 250 will be halfway between the 200 and the 300. This is brand new to us and is quite tricky, so any extra scales practise you can do at home will be helpful! https://www.purplemash.com/displayboard/5c77b180dcad171fcd640c08
We've been working so hard in Computing this term! After making up our own version of a fairytale, we've used a Free Code on Purple Mash to create our own coded story. These look simple but have taken many hours of creating, testing and debugging. We've included commands and outputs, sounds, movement, speech, collision detectors and timers - phew! Take a look at a few of our finished stories. To watch each part of the story, key from 0 to 9 in order. More stories will follow! In Maths this week we've been learning a little more about symmetry and went on a hunt to find symmetrical pictures that spell out a secret code.
